This week I sent a cold email (DM), dipped my toes in psychology, and was (kinda) surprised by a blockbuster trade.
Cold Email (DM) Debut
I haven’t been applied for jobs in a while because I had a specific company in mind that I want to work for. After doing an extensive background research, I put together a specific cold email and a newsletter mockup as recommendation. I showcased his contents about human behaviour and ways to make use of that knowledge for personal use or for brands. To get some insights about why you behave the way you do and take better control of it, check out the newsletter Built on Behaviour.
I’ll let you guys know what my cold DM looks like when he replies 😉
Psychology Classics
I’m reading the ‘50 Psychology Classics’ which provides overview, summary, comments, and the author’s background from the best books in the field. My favourites so far:
Gifts Differing: Understanding Personality Type by Isabella Briggs Myers
Although Briggs Myers never studied psychology formally, the personality test is still widely used by the public for job compatibility, marriage, counseling, and personal development purposes.
The main ideas: If we can find out why people are how they are, we can reduce friction and get our ideas accepted. The reason for friction is people fail to appreciate that the dominant process of another person works and works well. The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine
Women’s brain is shaped by dramatic changes in the hormonal chemistry, which is different during girlhood, adolescence, early adulthood, motherhood and menopause. Brizendine finds that women use different part of the brain and different circuits to complete the same tasks as men.
She concludes that the behaviour of women and men is powerfully affected by biology, yet the reality is not completely locked. She also breaks the myth that men are naturally better than women in math or scientific field, noting that women stays out of those field not due to the lack of aptitude, but the brain driven attitudes to the work involved.
P.S. There’s a movie under the same title! The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud
My dreams are random but it’s mostly very action packed. I never thought about dreams having a certain meaning or how the brain creates dreams. Freud has his own view about dreams, saying that dreams are the arena where the unconscious mind could express itself. He thinks that dreams are cryptic and easily forgotten because the conscious mind want to limit the unconscious mind’s impact in the waking life.
What is the most impactful psychology book you’ve read?
Uncle Drew with Beard and a Snake
James Harden is finally traded to the Nets after saying that Rockets is just “not good enough” and “It's something I don't think can be fixed” in a post game interview. Now the Nets has their own superteam with Durant, Harden, and Kyrie (Kai) Irving.
It’s a typical story in the modern era where players have more power. Having the best talents in the world means you have to manage superstars that have ego the size of their paycheck. Drama is unavoidable and the media powerfully control the narratives that attracts fans. It’s not bad for the NBA though. Instead of just basketball, the fans are now entertained with the off court antics and the league in turn increases their exposure and engagement.
Are you not entertained???
