The beauty of having your own business vs working for other people is you can do what you like and outsource the rest. However, being at the helm means the machine will only go as far as you take it.
Sure, having a good system helps it going, but making it go faster or change direction rest solely on the driver.
If my toy store is a car, you won’t ride in it. The problem isn’t the car, it’s the owner that doesn’t know how to drive and doesn’t have the knowledge to fix or upgrade its parts.
With that in mind, I joined a workshop ran by a small business community called Catika to grow the online store. The session was an eye opener, I didn’t realize how powerful a community is in running a business. I always thought that the journey to build one was solitary, but hearing other people’s perspectives gave me fresh ideas and pushes my thinking to next level.
The workshop showed that the small businesses are thriving in Indonesia. Many are jumping on opportunities in the middle of pandemic and it’s honestly unexpected, yet amazing to see so many great business ideas and niche popping up.
I also love what Catika is doing. They’re solving a real problem (community for small business owners) with practical and relevant advice. They have a solid team that consistently produces quality content and multiple revenue streams. Right now, I don’t think they’re profitable, but if they keep it up it’s gonna be big. I’m keeping an eye on em!
One dollar idea
950 million people need glasses, yet they don’t have access or the money for it. OneDollarGlasses use flexible spring steel wire to create frames, simplifying the manufacturing and bringing the material cost to $1. In addition, 200 jobs were created as a result of the project, illuminating not just the wearer’s vision, but also the local economy.
The Factsination
The Factsination lists the A to Z of things more likely to kill you than the AZ (AstraZeneca). This self initiated, pro bono project went viral, racking up thousands of followers and media coverage in just a few days.
It’s a lighthearted approach that puts the risk of getting the AZ vaccine in perspective, encouraging people to get the jab.

ps. I had a small part in making this happen and I’m super proud!
